Help shape the future of our cemeteries!

The City of Busselton is developing a 50-year strategy to guide the future development, maintenance, and operation of our cemeteries. We’re inviting community feedback to ensure these spaces continue to be managed in a sustainable and respectful way that reflects the diverse needs and values of our residents and visitors.

Your input will help shape how our cemeteries are planned, the services they offer, and how they evolve to meet future community expectations.

The City is responsible for the management of three active cemeteries:

    • Busselton Cemetery
    • Dunsborough Cemetery
    • Metricup Cemetery

Whether you’ve visited these sites, have loved ones interred, or simply care about how these important places are maintained, we want to hear from you.

Consultation closed on 9 September 2025. Officers will review all feedback and work with consultants to develop a Cemetery Strategy. This is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year. To learn more about this project visit: yoursay.busselton.wa.gov.au/cemetery-masterplan

    The draft Strategy includes:

    • A concept plan for eight rock groynes between Lot 66 Caves Road and the Siesta Park Holiday Resort boundary
    • A staged implementation plan, prioritising high-risk eastern areas
    • A long-term monitoring and maintenance plan

Consultation closed on 22 August 2025. Officers will review feedback and prepare a final draft strategy for Council to consider. To view more about this project visit the project page here.

    Update - May 2025

The City has been gathering names and information about the people who were buried in the Old Busselton Cemetery. Working with a group of volunteers and community groups, the number of people who have most likely been buried in the cemetery has grown. Initial records list approximately 250 burials (as listed in the State Heritage Register of Heritage Places Assessment Documentation); during this process this number grew to over 1,000. In April 2025, an updated list of burials was published to Your Say Busselton for the community to review and provide any final feedback.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to review the list of those buried in the Old Busselton Cemetery; the City’s Cultural Development Officer will now review any required changes. The list will be provided to the contractor, Hancock Memorials, to create the new granite plaques. Completion of the plaques is subject to Hancock Memorial’s work schedule. The City aims to install the plaques at the cemetery by the end of the 2024/2025 financial year.

The Tails of the City project is an initiative by the City of Busselton aimed at improving dog and cat management practices through broad community participation.

In response to the evolving challenges related to dog ownership, including dog behaviour, public safety, and animal welfare, the project seeks to review and enhance existing management controls. This initiative provides an opportunity for both pet owners and non-pet owners to participate in shaping the policies and practices that impact your community. By participating in the public consultation, your feedback will contribute to a city prepared draft Animal Management Plan, which will be made available for further public consultation. This underscores the City of Busselton's commitment to public safety, responsible dog ownership, and the wellbeing of all residents, visitors, and animals.

    April 2025 Update

Thank you to the 42 people who attended the two Tails of the City workshops this month. Participants worked with City staff to workshop key issues, objectives and priorities that will be developed into the Animal Management Plan.
