The City of Busselton’s City Centre Revitalisation Project commenced on 26 October with Stage 1A and will continue over the next 3 to 4 years pending ongoing budget approval.

Why is the City undertaking these works?

The City of Busselton is committed to providing the community, businesses and visitors with an attractive and welcoming town centre. Road layout and street landscaping along Queen Street has already been improved and the intention now is to replace the tired red brick paving which dominates the town centre. This paving is subject to damage from tree roots, wear and tear and general damage. Its dark red tone does not align to our town's coastal look and feel. This old paving will be replaced with modern exposed aggregate concrete pavers bringing an inviting and fresh new look to our town centre.

The first stage of the project in the 2020/2021 financial year is being funded through the Australian Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. This funding forms part of the Australian Government’s COVID-19 support package for local economies and communities. The City’s contribution, along with just over $962,000 funding from the Federal Government, is key to Council's strategy to stimulate our local economy which has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The City intends to procure the various components of the project by engaging local suppliers and contractors to complete the installation of the pavers and ancillary items. This will further support our local economy.

What’s included in the works?

Over a number of stages and years, the town centre footpaths will be replaced and upgraded. This includes the replacement of brick paving along Queen Street from Albert Street to Adelaide Street encompassing Prince, Kent, Duchess and Adelaide Streets. Subject to future funding, these stages of the City Centre revitalization plan will be scheduled over future budget periods. You can view the proposed stages here.

Planning for Stage1 of the upgrade project is underway with initial works encompassing:

  • eastern and western sides of Queen Street - from Adelaide to Kent Street
  • Estimated to take approximately 3 weeks to complete

The works will involve lifting up the old brick paving and replacing with new pavers made up of Fremantle Stone's 'Quartz' range including Charcoal, Greystone and Ice exposed concrete aggregate colour mix. This will be laid in a herringbone pattern (see photos).

To minimise the impact on businesses the City plans to undertake the majority of works at night (Monday to Friday) with the exception of localised preparatory works that will be undertaken during the day. Works may be undertaken during the day in areas where there is less impact on local business and customers. Vehicular traffic flow will be maintained at all times, with the exception of short term traffic control during construction deliveries and some parking bays adjacent to the staged works may be closed when required.

Subsequent stages will be undertaken outside of the Christmas and Easter school holidays. City Officers will be contacting individual businesses to discuss specific requirements. For example, restaurants that are open longer than retail businesses may have quite different requirements during the period of works.

The City will also be laying conduits and fibre optic cables as well as replacing and improving service pits, pipes, damaged kerbs and old street furniture where required.Where possible universal access will be incorporated into the works

The City will be contacting property and business owners to ensure that businesses owners are kept informed of the works and when they will be taking place.
