In Sept / Oct 2019 the City undertook community consultation regarding the concept plans for the revitalisation of Mitchell Park in the Busselton City Centre. A great range of feedback was received and City staff are in the process of finalizing the detailed designs and costings, the final design has incorporated key elements from the business and community feedback . This revitalisation work is scheduled to commence in February 2021. These works will be staged across a number of Financial Years and subject to capital budget endorsement.

Mitchell Park Revitalisation:

As part of the ‘Place Project’, the City recently held a series of community workshops in 2019 to explore how together we can create vibrant city centres. Mitchell Park Revitalisation featured strongly at the Busselton workshops. You expressed a desire to create a safe, welcoming and versatile space where people want to 'hang out'.

The City has used business and community feedback to develop the final design elements in the plans. Some key design features based on feedback include:

• Upgrades to street furniture, landscaping, shading and pathways

• Upgrades to lighting around the park for safety

• An emphasis on creating connection with surrounding shops and cafes

• A staged area to hold local events

• Improved pedestrian entries to the park

• Emphasising the importance of retaining the open green space and tree lined periphery to honour the parks history as the ‘green heart of the city’

• More widened pedestrian entry points in the park

• Install the new City Centre paving throughout the park

• New raised timber viewing decks with seating

• Stylised exposed aggregate concrete park entry sign, steps and seating arrangements inspired by local beach rock formations

• New planting islands of low native feature planting for colour and texture

• Use of natural materials such as timber and granite boulders

• Provide power points for market stalls and stage deck area

• Provide a dedicated area for a permanent or removable screen pending budget

• New sculptural shelter structures with seating node areas

• New pole lighting and tree up-lights to illuminate the park

• Universal ramp access to raised decks where possible

• Raised deck and planting island arrangement

• Park features – new park entry sign structure, seating node areas, sculptural shelter areas

The colours are for illustrative purposes only. The pink building in the background indicates the future expansion of Busselton Central Shopping Centre. This is not expected to be a blank wall, it is expected that this will be a shopping centre that opens out to Mitchell Park.
