Design Rationale:
Whale Song
Inspired by the annual migration of humpback and southern right whales through Geographe Bay, Whale Song celebrates one of Busselton's most iconic natural spectacles. The sculptural Whale Multiplay Unit forms the centrepiece of the playspace, capturing the graceful movement of whales as they breach the ocean's surface and inviting children to embark on their own coastal adventure.
Graduated play opportunities encourage children of varying ages and abilities to climb, balance, traverse rope elements and descend the slide, developing strength, coordination and confidence through active play. The Baby Bird's Nest Swing provides a shared, sensory-rich experience for younger children and those requiring additional support, while the universally accessible Swirl Spinner ensures inclusive opportunities for spinning, balance and social interaction.
Musical play is introduced through the resonant tones of the Babel Drum, encouraging creativity while evoking the rhythmic sounds of the marine environment. Surrounded by natural landscaping and connected by accessible pathways, the playspace creates a welcoming community destination that celebrates Busselton's coastal identity while delivering imaginative, inclusive and developmentally rich play experiences.
Aquarius
Inspired by Busselton's coastal lifestyle, Aquarius celebrates the colours, adventure and relaxed character of Geographe Bay through a playspace that encourages active, imaginative and inclusive play. The central multiplay unit offers graduated levels of challenge, with supportive stair access for younger children and climbing walls, overhead traversing and monkey bars that develop strength, coordination and confidence.
Inclusive play is embedded throughout the design, with unitary surfacing providing universal access to key play experiences, including the Swirl Spinner and Talking Daisy talk tubes. Interactive panels, such as the Tile Slide Frog Puzzle, encourage problem-solving, communication and cognitive development for children of all abilities.
A colourful treehouse-inspired cubby house complements the active play zone by inspiring imaginative role play, storytelling and social interaction. Surrounded by natural planting, shade and informal seating, the playspace provides opportunities for families to gather while creating a welcoming neighbourhood destination that reflects Busselton's coastal identity and supports rich developmental play.
