Concept Designs

Please review the two concept designs, Busy Bee and Sail Away, for the playground upgrade at Avignon Park and then provide your feedback.

Design Rationale:

Busy Bees

Inspired by the industrious world of the honeybee, this compact playspace is a hive of activity where children can climb, crawl, scramble, create and explore. Just like a thriving beehive, the design maximises every space to provide a rich variety of physical, sensory and imaginative play experiences that keep children engaged and active.

The Busy Bees Multiplay Unit encourages gross motor development through climbing, balancing and crawling challenges, while interactive elements invite children to solve, tinker and discover through open-ended play. Musical play is integrated with the Daisy Petal Drum, which is universally accessible from the surrounding concrete path network, allowing children of all abilities to participate together. The Home to the Hive Maze adds a playful cognitive challenge, encouraging problem-solving as children help the bees navigate their way home.

Together, these elements create an inviting neighbourhood playspace that celebrates the fascinating world of pollinators while fostering curiosity, creativity, physical development and inclusive play for children of all ages and abilities.

Sail Away

Inspired by the sailing culture of Geographe Bay, Sail Away captures the freedom and adventure of life on the water. Echoing the towering masts and geometric sails of yachts that grace the bay, the playspace invites children to imagine the sea breeze on their faces, dolphins surfing the wake and migrating whales passing through the crystal-clear waters beyond.

The striking Sail Multiplay Unit offers a variety of climbing and balancing challenges as children navigate their way to the highest point before descending the slide to the "ocean" below, building confidence, coordination and resilience through active play.

Inclusive play opportunities are thoughtfully integrated throughout the design, with unitary surfacing providing universal access to the interactive Fish and Chippy playhouse and Swirl Spinner, encouraging imaginative, sensory and social play for children of all abilities. Beneath the shade of the main structure, a suspended hammock offers a quiet retreat where children can rest, observe the passing clouds and enjoy moments of calm. Together, these elements create a memorable coastal playspace that celebrates Busselton's maritime identity while fostering imaginative, inclusive and developmentally rich play experiences.
