What is the BMRA Noise Management Plan?

The Busselton-Margaret River Airport Noise Management Plan (NMP) is a document that provides a framework for the effective management of aircraft noise, facilitate the reduction of aircraft noise impacts, provide clear and specific guidelines for airport users in their responsibilities and obligations with regard to noise management, and to provide the community with clear and transparent information on noise management controls and procedures relating to aircraft noise in the vicinity of the Busselton-Margaret River Airport.

What does the BMRA NMP include?

    The key components of the NMP include information and guidelines relating to the management of operational activities including;

    • Standard Hours of operations
    • Flight paths and noise abatement zones
    • Fly neighborly agreements
    • Flight training guidelines
    • Aircraft operational approvals
    • Noise complaints procedures
    • Noise Assessment and monitoring
    • Noise amelioration
    • Communication and consultation
    • Implementation and review

Are there any proposed changes to the hours of operations for the BMRA?

No, there are no proposed amendments to the Standard Hours of Operation.

Are there any proposed changes to the flight paths or noise abatement zones?

No, there are no proposed amendments to the flight paths or noise abatement zones.

Are there any changes to the Flight Training guidelines?

Yes, there are two changes to the Flight Training guidelines.

    a) Amend the aircraft type permitted for flight training from ‘single engine aircraft under 1500kgs MTOW only’ to ‘single engine, non-turbine aircraft only’.

The justification is that weight is not necessarily the best metric to use in relation to aircraft noise. For example, the noise difference between a 1500kg aircraft and a 2000kg aircraft is often marginal with the main differences in aircraft noise more likely to be as a result of factors such as make and model, engine size, airframe design and modifications.

    b) Increase the number of flight training hours for each instructor per week from 25 hours to 35 hours per week.

Has the City of Busselton performed Noise Monitoring?

The City of Busselton is carrying out aircraft noise monitoring at the current time (commenced 13 December 2021   - 28 January 2022) and will continue noise monitoring once the RPT (Jetstar) flights commence in February 2022).

Where can I find information on the flight paths for the BMRA?

The Busselton Margaret River Airport operates within uncontrolled airspace, this means that the BMRA does not have an air traffic control tower. There are Airservices Australia approved flight paths for the BMRA that apply to Regular Public Transport (RPT) services only (i.e commercial passenger flights).
