Welcome to Watch your Waste, the City’s community engagement platform page for all things related to waste and recycling!
Let’s face it, we produce a lot of waste. Every week or fortnight we fill our wheelie bins and roll them out to the kerb to be emptied. But we all know that waste doesn’t just “go away”. It has to be dealt with and there are many processes involved in dealing with waste which is typically something most people don’t discuss or know much about. So we want to get the conversation started, we want to know your thoughts, ideas, and feedback on waste issues so we can all be better informed about waste in our community.

The response which is potentially most useful will be awarded a Waste Free Living package! The ideas submitted here will be considered for the Community and Industry Engagement funding program run by the State Government (administered by the Waste Authority).

Introduce sustainability into the school curriculum so kids can educate their slack parents about recycling,composting and reducing our use!

Bin stickers communicating what our Waste is used for and prompting us to take particular items to collection points
There's always some stuff that you wonder if it should be going into the household bin or if it can actually be recycled, reused or repurposed in some way. A bin sticker on the lids of our green bins could be used to communicate to householders where they should be taking these particular items. Old paint, small electrical goods, small transformers, batteries etc. Prompting householders at the point where they are actually dealing with their waste. Again, a bin sticker on the lids of our yellow bins could be used to communicate to householders WHAT goods are made from recycled materials such as glass, plastic and aluminium. This would be encouraging to householders and also an effective prompt at the point where they are actually dealing with their waste.

Recycling pick up weekly and smaller green general waste bin
To encourage recycling, implement weekly pickup of yellow recycle bins. Also, reduce size of general waste green bin to deter people from filling it up with recyclable products.

Solar powered compacting bins. Tidy, hygienic, cuts down on environmental impacts due to busy overflow times ( ideal for Busso), Lets you know when their full via WiFi. Australian made. I saw them in other countries and very neat. Worth a trial maybe in the new Jetty development area. Might free up manpower also for the area outside Central Busso for better waste collections. Probably more companies than this one doing them.
